Active Matter Gameplay: Raids, Loot and the Core Loop
Understand Active Matter gameplay: prepare equipment, enter raids, gather loot and extract. Explore its core loop, anomalies and the main ways to play.
Active Matter is a first-person extraction shooter with equipment preparation, raid objectives, extraction and base/arsenal development. It offers PvE and PvPvE raids plus dedicated PvP.
Active Matter is a first-person extraction shooter built around raids, equipment and returning with what you collect. Environmental threats and anomalies are part of the fight. You can choose PvE or PvPvE raids, while dedicated PvP offers a separate way to fight other players. The official descriptions support that broad structure; they do not make every raid use identical rules. Steam game overview
What you do in a raid
The core decisions happen before, during and after deployment:
- Prepare your equipment. Choose what to carry into the raid. Because equipment loss is part of the extraction loop, your loadout is a commitment rather than a disposable match selection.
- Enter with a purpose. Work on the raid’s objectives while looking for useful resources and equipment. Hostile entities and anomalies complicate movement and combat; Open Raids also bring the possibility of encounters with other players.
- Decide when to leave. Extraction turns survival into a practical goal. Continuing to explore and returning with your haul are competing choices.
- Build for the next run. The official game overview connects successful raids with developing your base and arsenal. That preparation feeds into your next deployment. Official game overview
This is a useful way to understand the loop, rather than a fixed mission script. Objectives, locations and available raid types can differ.
Pick the experience you want
| What you want from a session | Where to start |
|---|---|
| Explore and fight the environment without opposing player squads | An Isolated Raid; see PvE and solo play |
| Combine extraction objectives with the risk of other players | An Open Raid; see the mode comparison |
| Focus on fighting other players | The game’s dedicated PvP category; check the available in-game option before deploying |
The first choice is the format. Playing alone or with friends is a separate decision: a solo player can still enter a format containing enemy players. A developer response identifies Isolated Raids as the option for solo PvE or a premade cooperative group. Developer explanation
What makes the setting matter?
The military equipment sits inside a world of unstable spaces, entities and anomalous phenomena. The official presentation describes changes to space and gravity alongside the extraction structure. Those hazards are part of the game’s premise, rather than evidence that it is a conventional military campaign. Official gameplay presentation
For a first session, choosing one goal—understanding a raid format, following an objective or learning when to extract—makes the decisions easier to follow. That is a suggested approach, not a claim that the game requires a particular route or loadout.
Gameplay questions
Do I lose equipment when I die?
The Steam description distinguishes protected or personal equipment from other gear that can be lost. Do not assume every carried item survives a failed raid. Check the item’s protection and the selected mode before bringing equipment you want to keep. Equipment and raid description
Can I watch a walkthrough before playing?
Alexir’s beginner walkthrough discusses raid selection and objectives. The relevant discussion starts around 0:54 for raid choices and 1:50 for objectives. Although uploaded on September 15, 2026, the creator says it was recorded before release and warns that an intervening update may change details. It is a creator explanation, not an official tutorial or our own gameplay test.
Can I play with friends on another platform?
The official FAQ supports cross-platform multiplayer with matchmaking choices. Read crossplay and platform settings before assuming your party’s settings or progression will transfer.
