Active Matter Game Modes: Isolated, Open and PvP

Active Matter describes three broad formats: PvE raids, PvPvE raids and dedicated PvP. Within the extraction side, Isolated Raids are the PvE choice and Open Raids allow encounters with other players. These are format distinctions, not a complete list of currently selectable activities. The official FAQ also warns that locations can be tied to particular formats, so selecting PvE does not establish that every map has a PvE equivalent. Official FAQ

Isolated or Open: the decision that changes your raid

If avoiding enemy players is your priority, look for an Isolated Raid. The developer’s Steam explanation says this can be played alone or cooperatively with a premade group. “Solo” on its own is not enough to establish that you have selected PvE. Developer response

Choose an Open Raid when you want the possibility of fighting other operatives alongside the environmental threats. Alexir’s September 2026 walkthrough distinguishes the Isolated and Open choices at approximately 0:54–1:23. Its later discussion of solo and squad matchmaking is a different setting from that PvE/PvP distinction. Three choices to check before you deploy

Do not use one answer as a substitute for another. An Isolated Raid answers the PvE question; it does not by itself prove offline support or determine which platforms your friends can use. See PvE and solo play and crossplay settings for those separate decisions.

Why older mode lists can be misleading

A June 10, 2025 announcement introduced three PvP modes for a closed-beta test. That announcement is evidence of what was tested then, not a complete September 2026 playlist. Similarly, a creator’s prerelease video can show an unavailable or planned activity without establishing that it is selectable today. Historical beta announcement

For that reason, this comparison does not turn old test names, locked menu entries or player-reported variants into a current full roster. Consult the available in-game activities for exact names, objectives and rotation.

Mode questions

Is PvE just an Open Raid played alone?

No. The developer identifies Isolated Raids as the dedicated solo or cooperative PvE option. Entering an Open Raid alone does not remove its multiplayer element.

Does every format have identical rewards?

Do not assume so. The sources establish the broad format choices, but do not provide a verified current reward comparison for every activity. Check the objective and reward information for the activity you are entering.

Which format should I try first?

If your aim is to understand the environment without opposing player squads, an Isolated Raid fits that goal. If competition is the reason you are playing, compare an Open Raid’s extraction structure with the dedicated PvP options. The gameplay overview explains how raids fit into the wider loop.
